WESNet is a network of WES related government organizations, NGOs, donors, academia and private sector players of NWFP in Pakistan. The need for network was reiterated by the Governor NWFP on World Water Day on 22nd March 2002, subsequently leading to the establishment of WESNet after thorough consultations with key stakeholders.
WESNet’s role in the rehabilitation process of the Earthquake affected areas:
On Saturday October 08, 2005 at about 08:55 a.m. our county experienced the first ever sorrowful incident of the history in the shape of an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 on Richter scale. The substantial magnitude of earthquake jerked the entire region of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and North West Frontier Province (NWFP) causing whole spread devastation and deaths in the area. WESNet was envisioned and created by a dedicated team of sector professionals. This included Mr. Tariq Hayat, the then Special Secretary of NWFP LGRDD who provided all the necessary governmental support to the idea, Mr. Zakaullah Khan the Executive Director of PVDP who contributed to the conceptual development and institutional support in the first year and Mr. Farooq Khan, the then UNICEF Project Officer who conceived and developed the WESNet idea, forged necessary alliances and was the key facilitator in establishment and institutional development of WESNet. Mr. Farooq remained THE KEY technical backstopping support to WESNet during his UNICEF Peshawar term and is still providing regular advisory support in his private capacity of being on WESNet advisory panel.
